FREMONT, Calif. — Professional artists have until November 15, 2026, to submit proposals for a new round of boxART!, Fremont’s public art program that turns ordinary traffic-signal control cabinets into artwork.
What the city is looking for
In its October 9 issue of The Fremont Connection, the city announced a new call for artists. The theme, “Creating Exceptional Experiences,” asks artists to interpret what makes Fremont a meaningful place to live, work and spend time. Suggested starting points include neighborhood stories, public places and everyday community life.
The city especially encourages Bay Area and local artists to apply. This is a proposal opportunity, not a guarantee that every applicant will receive a commission or that every existing cabinet will be painted.
Why boxes are used for public art
Traffic-signal cabinets are necessary street infrastructure. Artists can transform their visible surfaces into small pieces of local public art, bringing visual interest to intersections without requiring a separate gallery or large outdoor sculpture site.
The city has used the boxART! program before, and this call concerns a new phase rather than the creation of a completely new municipal art department.
How to participate
Artists should obtain the complete solicitation, including any eligibility rules, required design files, compensation terms and installation conditions, through the city link in the official October 9 bulletin. Do not assume that the newsletter summary alone contains all application instructions.
The deadline is November 15, but the exact submission time and terms should be confirmed on the linked application page before finalizing an entry.
