FREMONT, Calif. — With the wet season approaching, the City of Fremont is asking residents to prepare their homes and neighborhoods for heavy rain, blocked drains and other possible winter-storm disruptions.
What Fremont recommends
In the October 16, 2026 Fremont Connection, the city highlighted Flood Preparedness Week, October 17–24. Recommended steps include clearing leaves and debris from gutters, yards and drains; trimming dead or damaged branches; considering participation in the city’s Adopt-a-Drain effort; and enrolling in local emergency alerts.
Regular maintenance can help prevent avoidable blockage of drainage infrastructure during heavy rain. Residents should never step into moving traffic or floodwater to clear a grate, and should leave any downed power line untouched.
What a seasonal outlook means
The city discussed possible impacts associated with an unusually strong El Niño pattern. However, an ocean and climate outlook does not establish that Fremont will experience flooding at a particular address or on a specific day. Forecasts, storm watches and warnings should be checked closer to any actual event.
How to stay informed
Households can review the city’s storm-preparation bulletin for links to drainage and alert resources. Individuals with known low-lying properties, basement drainage problems or other previous flood exposure should review their own preparations well before the first severe storm.
When a storm arrives, rely on current alerts from local public safety agencies and the National Weather Service. Do not interpret this preparedness notice as a declaration that a particular road is closed or evacuation has been ordered.
